Btw: I hated having to direct. The thought of doing it for a film is horrifying. All of my directors were either known for making actors cry or groping them. So, when I was in directing courses (even though all I wanted to do was costumes...what we do for a degree, right?), I ended up with student actors outside of the department who cried when they needed to do something as small as project to the back of the room. It was miserable.

I feel like your short film was the predecessor to Lady Bird! The protagonists have similar personality traits and a similar mother-daughter dynamic, in addition to the cinematography style. Really great work

It is a beautiful piece to look at and I like the slow scenes - I can understand why you created that many. It is atmospheric and beautiful. If they would be part of a full length movie with lots of lively scenes in between and such it would have been great.

It would have been funny if after Poppy calls that woman a ‘fat whore’ (lmao by the way, totally caught me off guard and I laughed for like a whole minute) if the woman was the lady of the house and in the next shot Poppy’s sitting at the dinner table with like, a slap mark across her face and then it cuts to her mother just shaking her head. Also, I actually quite liked your film, and I saw what you were going for and what you were trying to convey.

I have watched the film. Please consider making it again addressing all the issues that fall short that you identified. It has a certain whimsy coupled with a pathos that could make it a brilliant view point into a young women’s hopes of herself. It needs to be handled with your new found sense of timing, budgeting and genuine finesse. I find your BRdesk videos very witty and thought provoking. I think you may have it in you now to perfect this story. Good luck with it all from here. A true fan!

I'm no critic or anything, but I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I'd even rewatch it. For the amount of time presented it said what it needed to say and felt complete. Though I'm sure you know, just like with the first of anything it's never perfect. To be able to critic your own work shows growth in your craft/passion. The film was no "flop," but only the beginning of a journey. Just like Poppy's ending.

It definitely succeeded in being a period comedy! (The beetroot comment made us all laugh) I don't think you want the feedback anymore (but since you've used your degree, give me a chance to use mine in explaining what i think) So yes, it is a bit choppy and the pacing makes the plot seem like it has the hiccups, but, at the 4 minute mark, I wish there was a longer moment to take in all the possibilities. Because at that point, the story could have gone to so many different places. The fact that near the middle of the film, the audience truly does not know which way you're going to take the story is really great! It made me anticipate what direction you would take it! The problem in my opinion, is that my imagination took me to a more satisfying ending than the film did, which is a personal problem I'll admit. But actually, I did imagine that Poppy would take up art, she wanted to be one with the art, and to be a part of the process of creating the art would agree with her desires. What I personally think it lacked is a singular resonating message. She didn't grow with the narrative, she's exactly as naive in the end, as she was in the beginning. The "death" should have had signified a change in her. Something I noticed and (makes sense within the film) is that she does look stunning, like art, while she lives, moves, loves, and imagines, not when she consciously tries to embody art. If only she could've perhaps realised that art isn't just on paper, or in an artist's muse; that art is in everything, life itself is art (hers certainly looks it!) would have made an impact and given closure to her story. aight you didn't ask but I did this for my satisfaction because i really did enjoy the film actually, it made me laugh and think of all these things.. I relate heavily w Poppy help me gdghhgjjhfkj bye edit: I actually really liked the music choices, they strengthened the identity of the film as a comedy! But the transitions between them killed it a little... not very smooth. Also, narration.... nah. Most of the scenes didn't need it, I cringed at "that's my mom" lol

Just watched your short and I have some feedback (whether it helps or not): The cinematography at times is great and really shows the painterly quality you're going for. I think the actress is a good fit for the role & the idea behind the story could work quite well. My main gripes with the film are the voice-over (lose it, it doesn't tell us anything that we can't see on screen), the music (takes us out of the world), the pacing (this could easily be a six minute film), and the biggest one is the script. It's not a funny script. I think it could have done well as a heartfelt story about someone following their passion no matter what, but the lack of speed and absurdity makes this slow and at times a little cringe worthy. I know these are harsh words from some anonymous person on the internet, but they are meant with sincerity in the hopes that you get back into film making using the lessons you have learned. All the best.

I'm a recent graduate of a film school (FAMU); I agree with all of your points and I admire your self-reflection. Frankly, the film is not very good. It's bland, it didn't make me care. The fact that you can recognise this means that you've learned a lot through the process of making your film, which is important - I think that's the main benefit of creating student films. Like you said, an open ending in a story that's not very driven to begin with can hardly be satysfying, but pacing is definitely the biggest issue. You blame writing - rightfully so - but I still believe a lot could've been achieved in the edit. Cut the runtime in half and it would work a lot better: there's just not enough story to warrant 12 minutes. This wouldn't be the case if you were able to create a captivating atmosphere, but this is where you ran into other shortcomings - mainly the very mediocre cinematography and sound design. I'm sure it's mostly the lack of skilled crew and gear that's to blame, but anyway, it doesn't bring me back in time to another era; instead, it keeps reminding me that I'm watching "just" a student film. I'm impressed by the set&costume design, especially considering it's your own work. As for the poster-painting, I honestly think it's the least of this film's problems, I didn't even notice it. The choice of music really is quite insulting - it's the "fake edginess" you're talking about which is only there on surface, it is not really incorporated into the narrative or the directing. Especially when you gave up on the quirky music midway through the film, it begs the question why it's there in the first place. Anyway, I hope it wasn't your last project! Making mistakes is a part of the process, as is embracing them and learning from them. On a positive note, the cast was pretty good, which means you have a good eye for actors and that you have talent in directing them - in a director, nothing is more important than that. Good luck with whatever you create next!

I have been a professional working in the film industry for 6+ years. What you accomplished was very good for what you had to work with. I think your analysis was interesting and shows a great deal of objectivity on your part, which a lot of young directors do not have. The humor landed, which IMO is the hardest bit to do. As far technically issues that could have been handled differently... you mention pacing. As I am sure you know a few seconds off a scene can effect everything. The first moment it felt too slow was when the mom was serving herself food, and the following mother scenes. It started to feel like it was making more fun of the mom that the situation. The second scene was when the painter felt uncomfortable, got up and left. I think it would of been a nice rift if he also threw her and her belongings on the curb similar to the madam. The product might work in a feature but not a 12 min short. As far as the painting, yes, since it was a hero painting it would have been ideal to print on canvas. BUT it could have been less obvious if when transported if was rolled, not folded (which it obviously was), printed on matte paper, or sprayed with a matte clear spray paint. OR it could have even been less obvious if the light had be diffused more. Anyways, I am glad you are able to rewatch, learn...and glad you have done so well on youtube!

I didn't like it but it's not bad. This is mainly because the actors, dresses and scenes are great. As a general period drama I find it akward but ok yet is pretty ordinary. However, when I consider that it was aimed as comedy, I can totally see why it flopped. There are very few funny moments, mainly bad executed. On the other hand it feels rushed and not connected. Multiple scenes are presented, you now one influences another, yet the obvious conection is lacking. I feel like no scene has a clousure or direction. She saw the man in the woods, then posses for him... How did she contacted him again? The "whore" was her boss? Also, for comedy angles can make ir or break it, specially when the time period is usually seen as serious, a different angle would have made it stand out. And the central comedy momment was the one were she became a muse, which also feels really rushed and lacks importance.

I don't know much about directing, but right away it felt like a home film because the camera angles weren't very creative. There's a scene in the starting where she's just standing doing nothing and we're not sure what she's thinking. Sometimes when she's walking the camera is shaky and placed too high up instead of where it should be on the actress. There was an eating scene where you could have shown a close up of the stew so we get a better idea of how poor they are and what they can afford. Also the "and then I died" scene should have started with her tripping on something on the way out to feed the chickens and then cut to the "funeral".

I know next to nothing about filmmaking and don’t watch movies often, but what wildly catches my eye here is your ability to grow and learn from your creative experience. I’m an aspiring writer and my own stumbling block is often fear of not knowing enough or fear of failure, so I spend years developing ideas but never write. The fact that you brought yourself out, made a short film, poured so much of your energy and heart into it, and then was able to look back at it later and learn from that experience? That’s what makes me so, so impressed. It’s something I could never do; I have great ideas that I know will be imperfect when I first work with them, so I leave them in my head where they look better. Even when I do want to start writing, I have the fear in the pit of my stomach that there’s going to be so much wrong with my writing, and so I get caught in a Catch 22 since my inexperience with writing makes me terrified to write all the time. I’ve been reading books all my life and getting straight As in English, and I always ace the English sections of all kinds of testings with flying colors, but I literally cannot just bring myself to devote time to my craft of writing because I have too much head knowledge (which definitely has more blanks than I know it does) and not enough experience. What’s worse: I know ALL OF THIS about myself, and yet it’s still so hard to work hard and fix it. Anyway, this turned into a bit of a rant, but I seriously LOVE your ability to work hard, critique yourself, and get better. It’s something I need, and it’s so special to be able to see.

I legitimately did not come to this channel expecting to learn more about filmmaking, so this was an absolutely pleasant surprise Edit: I know that a) I am in absolutely no position to give advice to someone who has graduated film school and b) you’ll never see this, but I feel like it’s interesting to note: I come from a writing background (nothing big, just some classes and some personal projects that I’m rather proud of), and I feel like I always hear film people using “show, don’t tell” to mean “don’t convey through dialogue what you could otherwise convey visually.” This is probably important for stuff like small scale exposition (e.g., “The warden keeps the key on his belt” vs a shot of the warden attaching the key to his belt), but when you start getting into information that relates to the characters’ internal states or how they relate to the world around them, dialogue becomes less of a crutch and more of a tool. Speaking of tools, I realize I have probably begun to sound like one. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I made the mistake of watching this self-criticism before watching the film. All your own criticism is rubbish. I really liked the film. It’s 12 minutes. You covered a lot of ground, and I thought you did present the reality of her situation, and that she still looked forward to her future. It’s has a touch of Woody Allen, and it’s charming. A couple of things. The scene that I didn’t care for was when she sat for the portrait. Remake that one scene. And the ending scene: She should’ve had charcoal and sketch pad, and a half descent sketch. Falling off her stool, priceless.

I think the 2nd line in the film is KILLER and should be the first line. The first line doesn't really need the "I believe" part. But the 2nd line is so good! Anyway, I'm impressed with how open and comfortable you are talking about something you made that wasn't successful. Usually we/people like to sweep those sorts of embarrassments under the rug. But making a video and saying, "I realized that while I showed the film to all of my friends, none of them gave me feedback other than 'wow, the location looks great' or 'are you making a sequel- haha.' " is GUTSY! I'm way more impressed with you doing this than I probably would be from a good student film. You rock!

I have seen a pattern of 3 sort-of laws in telling stories in movie form: Do not skimp on audio; it is more than half of the experience. Do not skimp on screenwriting; it is the substance that makes the audience core desire to follow the movie Do not skimp on production design; the location can be thought of as an actual part of the characters lives, and it should matter. From the small snippets I experienced from this video, sound and screenwriting would’ve needed proofreading, if it was possible in the schedule. I don’t know your situation with that though, because it was important to keep in mind that you were a student! And, you had to factor in time before festival due dates, and obvious budgeting that involved trying to balance compromising and (creative) problem solving. That, and I’m not a serious filmmaker (yet), I don’t know jack about the true process. Honestly, I really do admire the process of making this film, as you and your crew really did seem to be creative and dedicated with solving many sorts of problems, even if you perhaps overlooked some. I’m proud of people like you that bother to acknowledge those shortcomings much later even. Thank you so much for sharing this experience, as it really does help aspiring other people who want to dip/dive into narrative movies. I’m curious to know your experiences with the crew that helped keep everything together.

Actually, I think it's just in the script. We don't get a solid answer for how this situation turns out, so we're left with only an immediate sense of impending doom. Which, though it be spot-on for life as it is, is not how we do things in film, of course. The film is beautiful in every other way. It just...doesn't quite seem to have an ending? The only other thing I'd change about this beautiful piece would be adding a stabilizer effect in post to some of the shots in the beginning.

I just watched the film and here's my opinion: It started out very promising, I was curious what the story would be and what the characters are going to do. The scenery is beautiful, the characters and the art in the shots are interesting and very easy on the eyes. It's true that the long and slow scenes were in fact too long and kinda swept away the attention a little bit. Here and there you could see hints to topics you wanted to cover but they lacked in depth. In general I didn't understand where this was going and was indeed disappointed with the open ending. Also, I didn't feel a lot which is immensely important for short films. However, as you said yourself, there is a real potential here. Maybe if the story had focused more in depth on one aspect of the problems of the character and life in the 18th century it would've been easier to feel with it and follow along. The cinematography is beautiful. And lastly, most importantly, after watching your videos on BRdesk, I can see you in this film. It has your spirit, not really sure how to describe it. Most comes down to the specific kind of humour portrayed in it which is very specific to you as a person and creator I think. Regarding that you said this was what you wanted to portray, I think this really shows and you've done an amazing job here which makes this film unique as your film. More time and more budget could've immensely helped the film I think. Me and I think a lot of others would be intrigued to see other projects of yours which aren't made under time and financial pressure.

Honestly, I liked the film quite entirely, I only hated immediately the poster instead of a painting: it sets everything really off, because it's so fake... Same with the painting canvas at the end, even if maybe it is like that on purpose. But I didn't see so many problems in the rhythm or in the lines! I like long shots, silence, non verbal humor.
