Real Women - Beauty Through The Decades The Realistic Way

To be frank, it was supposed to be just another "Beauty Through The Decades" video. I saw lots of them already, but they all have seemed to show beauty standards in a very stereotypical and pop-culture way, so I wanted to do a more historically accurate one. As I was doing some research, I became more and more aware that beautiful faces and fashion we see on the photos, ads and fashion plates are just an idealistic version of reality. So here's to reality.
It was hard for me to make this video universal and find some papers referring to the whole Europe or even the whole world, so the numbers I used may be a little misleading. To make it clear:
- 40% of women in factories (1901) refers to Great Britain only
- one out of nine women working in domestic service refers to Russia.
If you know any other specific numbers referring to a wider cultural context I'd be more than greatful.

it doesn't seem possible that this video is 5 years old (and counting). Karolina, you did an exceptional job at this. This video should be one of the first things a person viewes when watching videos about women's clothing in the first half of the 20th century, even before the videos that inspired this one. Bravo!

to me all the images look like a pretty modern girl. No I get the idea.... but honestly= ) we all know the beginning of the 20th century was tough. For both women and men, and even children.

That was very interesting. But I was a little bit sad about the 1940´s women. She looks definitely like an American style. But how looked British, French, German and Russian women during this time: You know because of the War.

Yes but it's just focusing on one country it was different in so many places it would be too long to put countries like Japan, poland , south Africa, Brazil and all the other countries in one video so she just did America

👏 I love that you even let the flyaways in the hairstyles stay untamed. I would love to hear more about what drove these fashions (events, societal values, ideals, etc), both the fashions of the real majority and the fashions that were glamorized by the famous & wealthy. It would be interesting to know how much each side had an effect on each other too. I'm sure every Era looks to it's glamour fashion as an escape and/or an unreachable inspiration, but reality impacts glamour fashion too. Fashion is so beautifully complex and reflects so much of life, culture and history!! 😍

I was just talking about the 1940's in America with my Grandparents, they told me during the war at least here in America women were doing most the jobs as the men were all fighting overseas. The women were building planes and even tanks and doing some repairs on them as well as all the other normal jobs the men would usually be doing. Also they mentioned that the early to mid 1940's was when women started getting more jobs... some companies probably noticed efficiency Factories in America were definitely women working and some mines as My Grandmother was one. she talks about it all the time. Somewhere in Ohio mines. loved the video. My Great Mother was born in 1913 and died in 2010 at 97. She always wore a bun, dress at the ankles and spoke her mind to women in the family not crossing their legs or such. She married once and had 3 kids, the husband died while they were young and she raised them all herself. My grandmother has her apron she always wore at home while working as EVERYTHING else she had from her era.. furniture, husbands world war guns, dishes, dolls etc. were all stolen when she died from none other than distant family who lived in the area before her only daughter got there (my grandmother) as we live 1000 miles away. Including what we were really wanting, was our family history book dating back to the days of kings. AS the official documents burned down with many other families history. Okay I am rambling.

Did you know that in WW2 the US army had a shortage of nurses but still turned away hundreds, if not thousands of black women that applied because of their colour? Real history is too often not pretty and sometimes unnecessarily horrible.

For those that say there's NO SYSTEMIC RACISM, then where are your Japanese, Chinese, Hispanic, Indigenous, and Black women of this era?!!!... OH PLEASE, YOU'VE FORGOTTEN!!!!
Virus1956 10 horas atrás
@slawomirr12 No need to fight, just an OBSERVATION, that's all, but if I were to do my own VIDEO, believe me I would INCLUDE ALL the WOMEN of this world, after ALL that's what REAL WOMEN through the decades would look like to me and yet a many of others... that's all.
slawomirr12 19 horas atrás
@Virus1956 so you wanted some archives to be shown instead of Karolina playing those women... in such case, you can create such video yourself - you don't need Karolina for it, do you?
Virus1956 22 horas atrás
@slawomirr12 Well listen, Pole, couldn't they have reached back in their ARCHIVES and shown the real people of COLOR at this time or are they still hiding the real truth about them because of how they were treated or VIEWED at that time?... Like maybe keep them INVISIBLE because they NEVER MATTERED?!...because I'm sure they EXISTED, as they do NOW!
slawomirr12 Dia atrás
wouldn't it be seen as even more racist if she, as a white woman, blackened her face to pretend to be a black woman (Hispanic is no less white than me or Karolina, at least for us Poles, I guess)

When she says real women, she means all women. When she says real women, she is not excluding the class in the spotlight, she is saying “women who aren’t painted pictures by the media for the male gaze to consume”. She is saying alive women and their multifaceted lives that the media reduced to their bodies and appearance. Edit: i don’t think she is talking only of the working class/ women who lived through hardship. All women did. Yes some less than others, but all did.

A few criticisms: Average women back then definitely did not have a full face of “natural makeup” and the messy hair is over exaggerated. Still a better representation than most others keep up the good work.
