Piero Tosi died last week and it made me really sad. he was one of the first to understand how staying close to history can actually make the film costumes fascinating, not boring. sadly, I'm beginning to think he was also one of the last - today's mainstream cinema is all about "making things relatable for the modern viewer".

@Philippa Till the reason why is because bodyhair obfuscates the form of the body.

I'm not into historical shows, but the few I've seen always had me thinking I was crazy for their...choices?...of design. Thank you, for knowing that even laymen like I could potentially see something wrong. You didn't try to dumb down the costumes for sexiness or some other stupidity. It could have cost the show when it comes to that, sure, but at least we could enjoy it for the other stuff...like a story or something. I think I'd be kicked out alongside you.

This is how I think about post-modern architects. They see themselves more as artists than anything, which results in abominable monstrosities that are horrific to look at.

BBC's The Watch didn't even have to research a historical period, they literally had to read a single 200 page fantasy book and they opted for steampunk postmodern with an Irish twist. RIP source material, you will be missed.

Costumes aren't the only things film makers get wrong. In The Last Legion, which is largely set in what is now England in the middle of the 4th century, there is a castle which would be more-or-less appropriate if set a thousand years later. In the 4th century, they didn't even have the motte and bailey castle, which was introduced to England after the Norman Conquest in 1066. Incidentally, that same film has saddles with stirrups. The stirrup was unknown in Europe until about 700. As far as historically bad films go, I give the prize to Braveheart, which is loaded with errors from the first line of the opening narration (which has Alexander III of Scotland dying childless in 1286 -- both he and his two sons were very much alive in that year) to the last scene, which has Robert the Bruce starting the Battle of Bannockburn immediately on hearing of the execution of William Wallace. I know that news travelled more slowly in those days, but it didn't take nine years for that piece of news to go from London to Scotland. They even get the title wrong, since "Braveheart" refers to Robert the Bruce, not Wallace. But my favorite piece of historical tripe there goes to William Wallace having a one-night-stand with Princess Isabella, and fathering the future Edward III of England. Wallace and Isabella never met; she was a child of eight when he died; Edward was born seven years after Wallace's death. One note on costumes in that film: The kilt was unknown in Scotland at that time.

Would be nice if the greedy production companies spread the wealth by employing people to put in the work actually needed for historical productions. The process might create new customers as well. Considering I can no longer give away "property" I purchased to another. I miss the old days of swapping, trading, and giving away. Now it is intellectual property and I own nothing I buy.

I get what you're saying but the thing that bugs me even more is period pieces like something that takes place in the 80s or 90s and not a soul aboard the train if you know what I mean acts like they're from the 80s or 90s or even trying they think that just by putting in a bunch of big hits it'll convey the message that it'll be from the 80s or 90s that's almost a push button with me when I see that. Edit, holy crap Houston we have a problem. I bet they're putting the same amount of give a darn into the actors actually acting like they're from the time period as they're putting into the costume design. If so, that's completely unwatchable.

how do i lover this? let me count the ways.. in one short vid, you have summed up all my um anti- favorite things about "period" drama costumes. like Piero Tosi, I find accuracy to be full of hot opportunities. having WORN many outfits from other times, and not just a few minutes, people can make ANY kind of clothing attractive and sexy. i wan the real not the watered down modded up replacements I think i may have to subscribe.

As a movie goer (and not a costume designer) the part of this I felt the most was the part where it was suggested that viewers could probably handle accuracy and the other two just laughed up a storm. That laughter, in my opinion, carries into the film. I’ve seen many films where it feels like the production crew was just about certain I lack the intelligence, or perhaps refinement, to appreciate accuracy in a historical piece. You can practically hear the laughter throughout the film...
