17:25 "So I would wear more and more stuff that was sort of... I wouldn't say over the top, but you could tell something was wrong with me." Omg, this part made me laugh so hard! Seriously, though, that's what scares me about going vintage. People looking at me weird or my judgy friends saying something.

God knows you look better than I did in my grade school or high school age. I went to high school during the 70s; talk about ugly styles, hated those years, hated the jeans and clunky platform shoes. I loved my grandmother's old pictures; she looked so cool in her 40s and 50s clothing and had beautiful coats and shoes. In my working years in the 80s and 90s, I always preferred nice two-piece suits, coats, purses and shoes that I found at thrift stores and always liked being taken seriously even though I was just a medical transcriptionist, lol. I never have gone totally vintage but always favored softer colors and more feminine blouses. I went to grade school in the 60s with a gal who now is a wholesaler in clothing with her own place in Chicago (Andi Mazzone), specializing in "international and domestic contemporary women's clothing." Looking online at the things in her showroom, I swear, I don't see anything I'd even want to put on my dog, the clothes are all so ugly. I so envied her looks way back then; she's Italian and had those dark eyes and long thick hair. She's still cute but what a disappointment, lol. She actually dresses that way herself from the pictures I've seen of her. Oh well.

Regarding the criticism, I think there are two kind of insults: 1) "You look terrible, you're wearing this the completely wrong way, what are you even thinking, that is embarrassing, educate yourself you fool" 2) "Omg you look so stupid, are you one of these old stuff enthusiasts? Who even does that? Freak." Personally, the latter would offend me waaay more. I have no idea about fashion but I do things in the historical direction, and I rarely have a problem with criticism. But I do have a problem with ignorance. People who think they're smart because they're normal are the worst.

I went almost completely vintage over the summer before I began college. So I took a lot of vintage clothes with me to school. When I didn't fit in to my new social environment, I slowly gave it up, for the most part. I remember coming home for Christmas, with my vintage coat. My sister had gotten a new winter coat...and suddenly, I really wanted a new coat instead of my old coat. That's when I really gave up vintage. I'm so proud of you that you've stuck with it. Go YOU! Love your channel. Love listening to you. I'm the one whose mother and you look exactly the somewhere back in the generations, we must be cousins of some sort!

I honesty don't think you looked bad. People are too hard on themselves about what clothes or makeup they used to wear. If you like it when you wore it and it made you happy, it seems kind of silly to regret it now.

It's not only with vintage though... I remember being super proud of my unique style when I was younger (it wasn't anything specific), I'd wear super special items that would be hard to find (like massive sneakers with wings or tails) and once I got them, I was so happy but once I hit the street, there would always be some m oron making fun of me just because it was different 😒

it is a form of arts and has to do with emotions, also emotions you provoke in others. that's what i thought while listening to your strategies to deal with comments and reactions. this getting used to it...i know that and i don't. i was dressing rather expressively in my adolescent years... an old woman dropped a glass of pickles, as i turned around the corner. that's the only situation i really never wanted. and on the other hand, i didn't transition or transform, somehow. at least for sure not being aware of it.i love your humor and keep up your work, please!

When I was growing up, within circles of Polish youth of the late 90s and early 2000s it was seen as a trait of a "poorer" (financially) person to wear vintage because of the incredible (and still persisting) focus on the west and "American fashion", which didn't embrace "vintage" and "retro" styles until the mid-2015s really. So because of that, people usually dressed in styles evocative of Hollister/AE catalogues and very rarely something more so like Urban Outfitters today. I liked a lot of older styles that were hand-me-downs from older siblings and older relatives, and I remember guys picking on me saying I got my clothes from the "PCK" (Polish Red-Cross; organization which helps the less fortunate). I'm glad that now kids and youth probably don't have that problem anymore, but people in Poland are generally quite judgemental so I can understand how your transformation really did take years---because for others in other places (i.e. Berlin, London, NYC) it would probably be much faster of a transition, only because of the acceptance of "different styles" and plethora of great resources for experimentation (second-hand shops, specialty boutiques, etc)

One day after school I was going to the bus stop (I go to school in a city) I was wearing black boots with a little heel and I was already late for the bus so I had to take the faster route to the bus stop, but there are always some drunk guys who are standing there all day and I hate going past there but I had to......i was trying not to look at them and go past them fast. Suddenly one of them says "aren't you to young for those lady?" ( He meant the shoes) and I felt so uncomfortable and just acted like I didn't hear him....
party like it's 1949!
This is why I feel so self conscious wearing anything with even a slight heel. . 😕😖

I'm late to the comment section but whatever! I just want to add my in particular....... the drunk people reacting to you and people being either really appreciative or really derogative I think could come from the fact that clothing has always been extremely important to people since day one. The presence in our psyches of triggers and signifiers related to clothing and everything related to appearance and dress is precisely because of the need for and the purpose of clothing to account for, denote, protect, describe, signify and on and on all about who and what we are. Alas we find ourselves in a very undressed and often careless society that has all but abandoned the principals and values that are immediately obvious when you see someone dressed in a style and manner that is not the current lazy status quo. That's why you stand out; because you care about something they themselves have forgotten and neglected.

I love these videos.! We all can look back at pictures and wonder "what the heck were we thinkng??" I love her honesty and reflection and how her style took shape over the years. She is quite striking. Its more pleasant to gaze upon a beautifully dressed woman then one that is wearing pajama pants or those awful Lularoe leggings!! There is nothing worse , to me, seeing women or even young ladies, cheapen themselves with their clothing..or their hair. Im having a ball watching these videos!!

oh karolina i know the video is super old but i don't care. i am transitioning right now and because i have much older sisters i knew that beeing feminine is not about clothes and they all just started to wear mom jeans and so on.... so i wanted to be so woke and be the most boring transgender woman you could imagine.... fast forward one visit of a alternative fashion site and i am buying clothes that look kind of vintage and dresses... just imagine 5 minutes before i was all " what woman wears dresses in germany? why would you need to wear a dress to be feminine" and then i am sitting their filling my digital shopping cart with gothy, vintagy stuff....i also tried to make a meme, that only because i am trans i dont have to want to look like a barbie, but in the end i want to look like a 50ies-60ies barbie...

The part when you talked about being cat-called or harrassed while wearing vintage attire proves that street harrassment is not related by how revealing your outfit is, but rather by how femenine you look. I stopped getting catcalled when i started wearing masculine pieces and (sadly and awfully) once i looked more like a woman an less like a teen.

Those that mind don't matter, and those that matter don't mind ::) by: Dr. Seuss. Take it to heart, if u live by this mantra it will help you to make good decisions about things like how u want to live ur life, what's important, who's important, and to love urself and also not question ur decision making or ur intuition. And remember, we are always hardest on ourselves unnecessarily. I say "You go girl and don't let no one dull ur shine" or steal ur thunder!. Hope this has helped you to have a great day:) 🤡🙃🤗👏

i kinda relate to you in terms of trying to be fashionable while growing up when you also have no money, but what I eventually did was shave my head and buy some classic pants and jackets. I lowkey want to start gathering a vintage wardrobe, not sure whether to base it on male or female fashion though -- i do some swing dancing, so this style would definitely suit me well. Thank you for sharing! You're a big inspiration and just a very interesting woman overall.

I think what happens with vintage clothes is that they're generally perceived as being associated with "dainty and soft" feminine traits which attracts weirdos who associate themselves with toxic masculine traits. I know this video is hella old, but in my defense, I started watching it months ago and finished watching it now. So... Uhm. Yeah.

Thanks for this video! It was perfect. I loved every minute of it and all your insightful comments and stories. I started wearing a few vintage outfits per week because of period movies and old books I love. The time periods are so fascinating and nostalgic to me, and their value for putting care into dress, making clothes that last, as well as just general aesthetics, really appeal to me.

In terms of men giving unwanted attention if you are wearing vintage I think it’s not a specific vintage aesthetic that’s the trigger for that, I think any woman who puts effort into her appearance gets unwanted attention because men assume if a woman is well dressed with her hair and makeup done that it’s for their benefit.

You’re really not the only one who looks back on pictures with that attitude, I think we pretty much all do (maybe except a few lucky ones hmm) but you were a cute kid and we all need to acknowledge that without money it’s hard to imitate people who have money. Thrifting becoming cool earlier would’ve helped 9yr old me who was quite ashamed.
