guys, this video is about pale vs tan skin, not white skin vs other skin colors. comments praising white skin over other skin colors will be promptly deleted and the authors blocked. please let me know if you notice someone being inappropriate. this video is not a space for any racist remarks.

Also, with the rise of factories, suddenly poor people were pale, too, and it was no longer exclusive. While the rich were learning about the benefits of sunlight, the working classes were being forced into factories, so getting tan became a sign of wealth, since the rich could afford to spend their summers at the shore while the working classes were indoors, working.

Fun Fact: Tanning was also introduced by Coco Chanel when she accidentally "burnt" on the beach. She was so popular and people loved the look so much that they started tanning themselves aswell.

When you just are naturally tan and into vintage styles :(. I don't tan and always wear sunscreen, it's just my natural skin tone. Oh well, there WERE people that were just naturally darker or had to work outdoor and couldn't really do much about it even back in the day.

Exaaaactly!!! I feel the same way! I've never understood why people wanted to tan, Im pale af and never thought about getting a tan bc "its embarrassing to be too pale". I live on a tropical island and I'm still pale af, and I remember seeing a lot of people sleeping under the sun tanning. I dont have anything against people that likes to tan, if you do it safely and you enjoy it that's all that matters, I just personally find it so uncomfortable like being orange burn under the sun. And also I noticed that the majority of youtubers when they are prepping to go on vacation they get a fake tan bc they are embarrassed for being too pale and it's easy to feel pressured bc its basically everywhere

I'm natural pale but wouldn't tan even if I could. Cos skin cancer. I always use spf 20-9000 depending on whether I'm indoors or not. Yep, Uva/Uvb rays reach you indoors. It's a personal choice but I hope "tanning" and the "tanning bed" trends go out of style soon. I've seen too many kids get in those things in their teens, 20+, etc and I hope they don't regret that decision in 20 or 30 years.

I am also a pale person who has embraced pale-life. I burn rather than tan and when the painful red-ness fades the tan I am left with makes me look like a more normal non-extremely pale person who looks pale and sickly, if that makes any sense. oh I am also allergic to most sunblocks. you can find me on a topical vacation by looking for the woman with a giant hat and sunglasses also wearing long sleeves and generally full length leggings in tropical heat.

When I stay inside and lose my natural tan the bags under my eyes and veins in my eyelids are more pronounced and I feel like I look sickly. But if I get too tan, my dark hair gets sunbleached and discoloration marks on my face show up more so long story short I wear hats now 🤠

Even though I've got dark brown hair and eyes, my skin is so white and thin you can almost see through it. Beside doctors having no problems with finding a vein, I also don't tan. I always look like a gost in summer or burn, despite lathering myself with 50+ sunscreen, after a very, very short time in the sun, ending up with more freckles when the sun burn has healed up. So no thank you - I rather stay out of the sun, white and out of pain.

Im very very pale and I can barely tan and get sunburned easily! But funny thing is I tan ONLY if I go to the beaches here in the north, so friends can always tell if I went south for holidays or not XD I’ve been told it’s because of higher levels of iodine on northern beaches but still leaves me clueless. Anyways use sunblock year around no matter your skin tone folks!!! Sun damage is serious!

Uh, SPF filters don’t prevent tans. They block UV rays from burning your skin, they don’t prevent melanin production. I wear SPF everyday, I still tan if I stay outside for a period of time.

When I was about 10 years old I used to spend A LOT of time outside and therfore I had dark tan, my natural tan is much lighter. My family and neighbours made fun of me for being darker. My doc told me the reason I now have so many skin blemishes, keratosis, freckles, etc. is from sun damage when I was younger. I did not use ANY sunscreen products, which barely existed anyway, but put baby oil on my skin so I would tan darker! The skin on my forearms is literally like lizard skin now. Don't do it, girls. It's not worth it. Go get a spray tan and put a hat on and use LOTS of sunscreen, and you won't get brown spots and keratosis. And no lizard arms!

Like A couple weeks ago my family on my dads side rented a house in lake tahoe (this trip was booked summer of 2019) because my grandma just retired and what not. I’m studying dermatology right now, and just FYI sunscreen does not block out the vitamins you get from the sun. YOU WILL AGE BEAUTIFULLY the less you tan. Even for darker skin women, tanning and exposing the skin to UV rays is extremely harmful and speeds up aging tremendously. I have tan skin and yet I still wear spf 50 everyday, because my skin will thank me when i’m older. Also don’t forget about skin cancer.

I look like a zombie for others as you said too, but in my case it's even better, than having tan.. With dark brown/almost black hair and eyes that's the easiest way to avoid racist attacks..When I had natural tan (just to be outdoors doing anything, and not with the purpose to get tan) ppl called me gipsy on a very rude way... Even if I'm not, just part of my family comes from Croatia where dark hair and eyes are common features.. Yeah, fun times

I hide my face from the sun all the time!! The sun wrinkles your skin and makes you age faster. I am on my early 30’s and most people are shocked when they ask about my age ‘cause I look 10 years younger 🤓😜

You’re so relatable to me. Since I can remember every year of my life I went to the beach for about three months on vacation, I also never used sunscreen during all these years and I did not take care of my skin to the point that I had several problems with my skin, it was dry when I tanned and I didn't look good tanned it just didn't go with my features but I didn't take it into account until I was 15 years old. So I decided to take care of my skin and do a skincare routine because I realized that the tan just did not suit me, in three months I became much lighter (my original skin color). When I returned to school everyone looked at me strangely and even yelled at me saying that I was racist and my classmates made very bad jokes, it became bullying for the simple fact that my skin returned to its natural color, the white color with which I looked better from my perspective. so I told the girl that bothered me a lot to shut up and that if I liked being pale, what was her fucking problem, I didn't say anything to her when she tanned, from there people just accepted it. What I'm trying to say is do what the fuck you want to do and what makes you feel better, don't give a shit about the others

My take away is that people should be as tan or as pale as their happiness defines and we need to stop conflating skin color with personality traits. Being pale or tan isn't bad. Giving people grief over their choices is what's bad. That aside people should remember a good SPF! Skin cancer is no joke.
