How I Do My Hair, 1940s Style - Long and Detailed! 

I use rollers even night, and in the morning I either fill a bowl with water or fill the sink with water, and while I take the rollers out and do my brush out and makeup and stuff I let the rollers soak. The you squeeze them and let them air dry all day, it helps them rollers retain their shape longer and last longer.

The back side always falls out for me!!! I even tried some curl creams and products to help but I always have to heat curl them in the morning

I just know that I would be bald after that brushing part

Flat hair, The angle one combs the hair in a section for placing on rollers will have more volume at the scalp, if the hair is held at 90 degrees off scalp and rolled, here you rolled it at a 45 degree or so angle.

So how long did the brush out actually take? I appreciate that you showed the struggle...I’ve tried pin curls in the past and definitely got frustrated at the frizzy mess stage

Hello Mean Mom, my wonderful/glamorous mother taught my sisters and I how to roll on hair on brush sponge rollers back in the 1950s, (torture) then sponge roller were invented, I was an expert by the first grade. My hair was fairly straight and did not hold a curl for very long. This made me sad. But the sixties came and straight hair was all the rage. Now days , I can add sculpting gel with my pink rollers for an authentic 1940s look or a flat iron for the long straight look and everything in-between with an assortment of bobby pins, Spanish combs, hair bands and so on. Thank you for this posting, I will use this technique tonight. I too dress vintage, 90% in public . Most of the time its women who compliment me. I enjoy your channel. You're in my top 5.

Try taking a small section, and brush it out with a wide tooth comb to get out the tangles out and separate the hairs. Then take one of those brushes that is rectangular, with the straight rows of bristles. I'm not sure what they're called, sorry. Then you can brush against your hand. I have a butt ton of hair, and I use this method. It helps so you don't pull out so much hair and hurt yourself. I mean, you just put yourself through a night of sleeping in foam rollers! (I find that makes my head a little sore in a few spots 😂) hope this helps

Start brushing at the bottom first. Then work your way up. Or possibly pull all the hair back and twist a pony tail tight with some curling cream and tie it up in a tight cinnamon roll type of bun for about an hour. When you take it down you should be left with just waves. Not spring rolls.

I used to do the Bobby pin curls for my mum, but when we brushed it out the next day, I was always scared to go too far, because I didn't want to lose the curl.

Do you know if rag rollers work for this set? I hate to spend the money on foam rollers (which I'm pretty sure aren't supposed to have been invented yet!) when I always have plenty of ripped up old crap in my rag bag that's totally free. Usually I am much too lazy to do this so my hair stays pinned back in a bun, but that just makes me look like an Okie and/or a refugee. Actually plenty of WWII refugee women in photos seem to look better than me somehow... =(

i got the same rollers, also from the uk and found it so uncomfortable to sleep in them, then later on (also out of constant fear of running out of rollers) i bought some really cheap ones online ones and cs the plastic on them is alot softer they are sooo much less noticable during the night!

Can you use some sort of an oil to help with tangles without ruining the curls? Asking for a friend.

Late comment readers, hello, I'm seeking advice! What if your hair is so silky no amount of effort (even going to bed with curlers hairsprayed tigh) will hold it curled? Not thin hair, just silky as hell.

man my hair is so thin and fine, if I brushed it like this the waves would probably disappear:D I usually brush it like once or twice and then I'm scared to touch it. It may be faster than brushing out your hair but I think yours is much better suited for vintage hairstyles and I'm super jealous of it TT

The back hair never holding a curl... So relatable, lol! I put rollers yesterday evening and removed them this morning, and what do you know? Back hair, barely there curls... And the combo of perfectly curled hair and that... It is truly disgusting, even more so because, of course, the back section of hair is quite longer than the front (a bit like you, but more of a V shape), so add curls in the mix... Bleeeeeh.
