The film Barry Lyndon and the USSR miniseries War and Peace from 1967 are worth watching just to see very good reenactments.

The subtitles say "I'm a bag full of fringe" [bangs] when you are indeed wearing a bag-like beret. Wielki szacunek I'm afraid I missed the backstory and sat down again in front of my computer at "so I slept with those soldiers" massive LOL

I love history. I'm an interpreter. I love historical interpreters. They do a great job. Colonial Williamsburg? Jamestown? All super cool. ... But for some reason, I feel like I would be that one asshole who would start laughing when they started "battling" and "killing" each other 😅😅😅 I don't even know why.

"The horses are the most exciting part." Well, naturally, and cavalrymen knew it too. This is a little late (Victorian Era) but it certainly captures the cavalry mindset throughout history to a tee, and was still being stolen for use in WW2 cartoons: punch.photoshelter.com/image/I0000LEv5mpE01Cg

I am a Brazilian and I live in Wrocław. I decided to start to show around Poland for Brazilians, but I am very shy and awkward. I can totally relate to the feeling of talking to a camera in Portuguese while everyone else is speaking polish. I just want to crawl to a hole and hide as people stare at me. I don't understand why, but the channel is slowly growing, and many portuguese speakers are showing interest in getting to know the country. Well, Poland is beautiful. I love your videos.

It's so good to hear what reenactments are like in another country! By what I heard and saw about the reenactment you attended in Europe, it seems that a majority of American reenactments are a bit less "open." They don't really invite young or new reenactors into the reenacting world and are a bit more private. Years ago, I realized that the pros aren't always willing to teach newbies, and they treat them like burdens. But anyway. . . And I agree that the horses are what make reenactments so exciting!

That's a pity! Don't know much about other European groups, but Polish reenactors are very welcoming since it's still a small and not very well known community. They're actually surprised someone enjoys the idea and wants to join in!

If I remember correctly he was 164 cm or maybe 161 cm (so about 5 ft 4 in., right?). It was close to average back then but he liked his guards to be over 180 cm (about 6ft.).

It all depends on what era you're looking into, but from my experience the easiest way is to find reenactment groups from your area and see what sort of events they attend. That's an easy way to see what's actually worth going to, cause some of those events are made for tourists

The women who followed the troops were called camp followers. I love your hair in the video, and can't wait to see your tutorial.
Rich McGee
Rich McGee 10 meses atrás
@Menacing Kumquat A fair number of them were soldiers' wives, often with their children along with them, many of whom provided laundry and or food preparation services day to day. There was some overlap between the "wife" and "prostitute" subsets, and some of the children got abused that way as well. Not a pleasant period for most folks. Keeping the camp followers down to manageable numbers was a major concern for most armies, and there were period jokes about how the (INSERT NATIONALITY SPEAKER DISLIKES HERE) soldiers were outnumbered by their camp followers.

@Michael Heath Actually they definitely cannot be called prostitutes. In German area those were called kampfrauen. These women mainained the troops, e.g. stored and cooked food, mended and washed clothes, cared for medicinal issue, and also had sex, but it cannot be called prostitution which is much later phrase and is connotated negatively. Back then sex was treated different way. They were paid, but they would make lots of necessary camp activities. Also, they had special attire, with amazing characteristic silhouette and details - skirt hemp was lifted by making a sort of frill around the hips, plus special chest hanger where the camp-women used to hide their income and some personal most precious belongings - at least they did in German and Silesian area. All together, I want to say (late though:) that we should really estimate the role of kampfrauen / camp-women, in Polish markietanki although all men-reenactors usually laugh (or at least smile) ironically while speaking of these important ladies who helped, supported that much the troops, but even though the troup dare to underestimate them, such a shame. It's a very typical difference of two oposite perspectives. Kampfrauen - Karolina, adorable outfit, I would really appreciate you reenacted it and speak for them loudly of their massive important role. You would certainly look good with that special silhouette. No troop camp would survive without them. Greetings, and Karolina, thanks for sharing your doings now on.
Michael Heath

"camp- followers" (prostitutes who go where the army goes. or should I say went. I don't think that's still a thing. But back then it definitely was.)
