For Crimson Peak there is a reason for the old fashion costumes of Jessica. Her character's family is veeeeery poor (for landed lower nobility). The main character says something also about Tom's character (the brother of the old fashioned lady), something like "His clothes are hand made but overused/old fashion".
Guilherme Robaldo
Guilherme Robaldo 27 dias atrás
The red dress in Crimson Peak worn by Jessica probably has an earlier design on purpose! She and her brother live in a old decaying mansion, and they are broke. There is even a scene where people talk about her borther's clothes being old looking.

I love your videos!! Btw one of my pet peeves is when "historical films in which the real historical context is important" are confused with "films in which the important thing is the plot and the historical setting is vague or just for aesthetics" Tim Kurton's movies are of the second kind. The clothing designs in his films are according to his own vision of the plot, not the historical context, so analyzing them like that, seems wrong to me. Of course, the hairstyles in historical movies also annoys me (soooooo much XD). I don't mind the "middle parted poodle bangs" from the Georgian era. It can be beautifully made. I think a wonderful example of historical accuracy in costume and hairstyle is "Crandford" and "Return to Cranford"

Could you please take a look at Downton Abbey? I see nothing but positive reviews online but when I watched it... Maybe it was just me but that first episode is supposed to be 1912 and it looked to me like half the cast or more didn't have the right silhouette... Or had something that looked distinctly modern. You being the expert, I would love to hear your perspective!

The Young Victoria begins in 1836/7, she was still a girl! The fashion of this film is appropriate for a teenage girl, but I do agree that the necklines were rather low for day wear.

Would love watching a review of Lark Rise to Candleford costumes. It's a series and it might be a bit... shall we say *varied* with all the class differences and stuff, but it just looks nice to my uneducated self so it would be interesting to know if it's accurate at all. Or you can try outsourcing this one to Bernardette, if she changes her mind about doing any more film costume reviews 🙃

The PBS masterpiece show "Victoria" gets an A from me on accuracy. They paid close attention to day vs evening wear. Always showing her in long sleeves and a high neckline for the day time. They use so many beautiful satin dresses in jewel tones with beautiful lace... jewel... and beaded details. Best portrayal of Victoria I've ever seen on film.

Lol i know im late but here it is. I love Crimson Peak so I bought the "Book of darkness" behind the scenes book. So an explanation why Chastain's dresses are old fashioned is because theyre supposed to be hand me downs from her mom. They didnt have an adulty figure to tell them whats fashionable and whats not nor did they have the money to buy new clothes. It was even referenced in the movie, where one of the minor characters said that they looked old fashioned. Daz it bye

In Crimson Peak, (no spoil, i promess) the Jessica chastain's character is kinda stoke in an old period of her life in big old creepy mansion. So, maybe it's was made on purpose to use old looks for the dresses 🤔

I am from France and I really love your videos! I may have a suggestion about a French film that takes place in 1912 in Paris if I remember correctly. It is called "the extraordinary adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec", it's adapted from a French comic book and I always found the costumes in this film beautiful. I'd love to hear your opinion on it.

What about HBO John Adams, Turn: Washington's Spies, or 1776 (the musical)? There is a wide variety of dresses, and they're all set in the same time period. It would be interesting to compare how the costumes are different but all set in the same time.

Hi, I recently rediscovered and subscribed to your channel. I was thinking, could you make one of these videos about Polish period movies? You know, like Pan Tadeusz, The Promised Land (Ziemia Obiecana), The Doll (Lalka). The adaptations of the Sienkiewicz's Trilogy would be also interesting, unless the XVII century Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth isn't your area of expertise at all. I know that most of your viewers aren't Polish but they seem to be interested in the Polish-related stuff.

I couldn’t agree more. Crimson peak is amazing when it comes to costumes. I’d like to add that the reason Jessica chastain is wearing clothes from a decade ago is because of her character. The brother sister duo have property but they’re not exactly rich so she can’t afford latest fashion.

The reason that Jessica Chastain's character is wearing older clothes is because she's poor and she's pretty much wearing her mothers hand-me-downs. They purposely put her character in older clothes, and Mia Wasikowska's character in clothes that were fashionable for the era. It shows not just that Chastain's character is poor, but also that she is stuck in the past. She was meant to contrast against Wasikowska's character, who is a modern, young, fashionable woman. It's just like in Breakfast at Tiffany's where Holly represents the hip, modern fashionable, young woman, and Emily contrasts her as the older woman stuck in the past. This is shown in their fashion choices, just like in Crimson Peak.

With sleepy hollow where the town is meant to be it’s expected to be behind the fashions of the city also the reason her character looks so young is she is only meant to be around 16 years old but at the time she was considered old enough to marry. And his mother had her dress like that because 1. Her strict husband was not around 2. She was wanting to not be so consricked while playing with her son so she had loosened the front of her gown removed both her shoes and stockings and the fisue covering her breasts because as I said she was playing with her son not getting read to receive guests or go out to a party and with her husband being so strict she would want her clothing to be as loose as possible when he wasn’t around but not so loose that they would fall off

CRIMSON PEAK IS VERY VERY BEAUTIFUL! And your interpretation of Jessica Chastain’s costumes being a decade back is a part of the plot. That’s very very intentional. It’s a dark gothic like the classic novels, and I think it did poorly cause people expected a modern horror flick.

I think Brooklyn is such an important film for emphasising how important cultural and character context is in costume design. Eilis is a young, presumably working-middle class girl living in the West of Ireland in the early 1950’s. Her and her friends’ hair is long, a style more popular in the 1940’s, which portrays to the audience that the place in which she lives is rather traditional. That along many other character appearance details are so so important in getting across the setting of a film. Another great video Karolina!!❤️
